Handling disinformation for statistical institutes – how to engage with disinformation and spreaders of disinformation.

During times of Covid-19 we have seen a surge in disinformation (fake news) in public debate. National statistical institutes have been bothered by it as well. Disinformation can threaten the position and trustworthiness of official statistics. Therefore, within the European Statistical Community (Eurostat-ESS) a taskforce has been set up to find common approaches on this matter.

This taskforce defined a common framework with an agreed definition of disinformation (fake news, but this naming to be avoided), tools to identify and monitor disinformation,  shared experiences and recommended rules of engagement to disinformation. In the workshop we will share each other’s experiences and evaluate the methods to engage.
